- DC’s Summer Dog-Walking Tips
From keeping them hydrated to watching out for hot pavement, follow these simple tips to ensure a safe and fun summer season for both you and your pet!
Carry water and a bowl for your pet to drink from, especially if you're going on a long walk. Try a collapsable bowl for convenience.
Protect your pet's paws from hot pavement and sidewalks.
Seek out shady areas such as parks and grassy areas. Choose the shady side if you must take the sidewalk.
Watch for signs of heat stress: excessive panting, lethargy, drooling.
Limit walking time on hot days or arrange for your pup to spend some extra time at a climate-controlled indoor doggie day care.
Keep flea and tick treatments up to date.
And…Dogs can get sunburn, too! Limit time in the direct sun especially during the most intense period between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Summertime is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors, but it's also important to remember to take precautions when walking your pets. Make sure they have plenty of water to drink, limit vigorous activity and avoid hot sidewalks and pavement. With a little preparation, you and your furry friend can enjoy the summer sun safely!
